Gas Pump Toppers and Digital Signage

Gas stations heading the push forward for a digital signage revolution, ensuring that each on site convenience store can survive the recession.

We all hear that people are hungry for information, sports news and the like; this is one of the main reasons why gas station TV channels are so popular, as they blend in advertisements in to the news slots or weather updates. This way of marketing is called the Captive Audience Marketing, yes because you are captive only for three to five minutes whilst filling your car, so these TV channels can sell to you the in-store merchandise.

When you have been driving past gas stations in America and Australia you will probably have seen these units, they are a small scale version of a digital signage billboard, sat atop the gas pump, (hence the name gas pump toppers).

Many TV stations are specialised in offering this sort of advertising medium, and it is also gives the consumer something to do whilst filing their car. You can select the area you want to target as these systems offer local, regional or national coverage, all you need to do is set out who you want to target.

These pump toppers are manufactured from steel and accommodate 2 LCD televisions or displays at a viewable angle back to back, with a media player located between the two displays. The media player can have either a wireless or hardwired connection into the data network of the gas station utilising the existing category 5e data cabling already there or wireless technology. From here the content can be updated at pre set times taking the stress out of updating the content for convenience store operators and owners.

Dave has many years experience manufacturing enclosures from gas pump enclosures to outdoor LCD enclosures. LCD Enclosure Global are here to help anyone who is considering fuel pump advertising. LCD Enclosure Global – anything else is a compromise.

Gas Station Advertising – Increases revenue by 40%

Digital signage is spreading like an epidemic to the gas or petrol station, why? Gas pump advertising is proving to raise revenue up by an amazing 40%.

Drivers really like the convenience of pay at the pump technology, as a typical sales man can drive over 300 miles per day, and paying at the pump will save him time which is valuable as he will never have that time again.

With up to 70% of drivers paying at the petrol pump this makes for 70% of less foot traffic in the convenience store attached to the gas station and operated by the gas station operator.

One company partnered with Chevron to educate and entertain drivers whilst at the pump refuelling, these pump top displays use video to drive and entice drivers into the onsite store. Using wireless technology, these were connected up to products in the convenience store promoting meal deals at specific times of the day, also called day parting.

Wireless technology is quick to deploy and has low installation and maintenance costs, the system is powered by an off site server that is connected wirelessly, with some wireless connections being bounced 40Km, distance is no longer an issue. Another aspect of this type of connectivity is that there is little disruption to the gas station operation, as the station does not have to close whilst the displays are added to fuel dispensers.

This system has been tested over a period of 6 months and has proven itself as a winner with an uplift in revenue form the convenience store by 40% on previous months, none fuel and car wash sales have soared.

LCD Enclosures Global supply Winter Olympics with Touch Screen Enclosures

LCD Enclosure Global who is based in the UK manufactured and supplied a range of outdoor LCD enclosures, for digital signage applications.

In November 2009, they received an enquiry for a prototype unit that was a hybrid of an outdoor signage enclosure integrated with a touch screen display (using through glass technology), a unit was manufactured and shipped to Vancouver, Canada and the solution was approved with a further 8 units were supplied by the middle of January 2010. Due to the current weak pound the solution was more cost effective than purchasing a similar solution from a USA or Canadian manufacturer.

This new option has been added to their portfolio of gas pump enclosures, taxi cab advertising toppers to compliment their outdoor digital signage enclosures.

The digital signage integrator was deploying a solution for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and needed a secure solution that also featured “through glass” touch technology; this was achieved by a secure outdoor LCD enclosure with an integrated touch screen panel for a 36” Samsung LCD display.

LCD Enclosure Global have positioned themselves as the World’s leading manufacturer of protective enclosures for LCD and plasma displays that are used for digital signage and outdoor home cinemas, these are supplied by their distribution channel based in Australia, America, Canada, Singapore, Europe and Israel, who already supply the digital signage industry.

Proving that digital outdoor signage and the 2010 Winter Olympics is a winning combination. To see the full details and the product range visit www.lcdenclosure.co.uk.

Choosing an Enclosure Manufacturer

When you decide to purchase a home, you don’t drive by the house, then call the agent and pay the money – do you? Well for sure I would do my homework and you need to as well.

The same can be said for purchase an enclosure or a kiosk, purchasing a kiosk enclosure is an investment and should not be entered into lightly.

Choosing a manufacturer.
There are many high quality manufacturers throughout the world and on the flip side there are manufacturers who will come up with a product that is marginal, as they see enclosures for digital signage as a high profit maker, so one of the first things to do is look at their testimonials, check them to see if the customers are from the digital signage or retail sector, it is no good if you choose a manufacturer who has little knowledge of digital signage.

For example if you see a web site and the customer recommendations are from manufacturing or industrial companies, the chance is the manufacturer has supplied them with an industrial enclosure for their factory floor not a digital outdoor enclosure, so they will not understand fully the requirements for signage access.

Another tool in checking out a manufacturer is to visit their manufacturing facility; here you can see how much of the production is actually related to dynamic signage, you will also be able to get a feel for the units as the most successful manufacturers will have the odd kiosk in their reception or foyer, so visitors can have a play and see the quality of their work.

One company we know have an “open door policy”, so if anyone wants to visit their site they just call in and they are shown round the facility, the Manager has been caught out a few times in jeans and flip flops, however the product and reputation of the company speaks for itself.

Choosing The Right Enclosure For A Kiosk Project

Choosing the right enclosure for your kiosk can make you outdoor digital signage campaign a success providing you know what to look for. When you are deploying a kiosk project it can be a daunting task, but the correct way to start the project is with the enclosure that will be based around the kiosk.

The general public may view a kiosk as a metal box, how wrong they are, but at the end of the day they are the customer and the customer is always right.

Getting the “metal box” right is a crucial as the touch screen, hardware or software, the best way to look at an enclosure as the skin and bones of a kiosk, whilst he computer gathers information and crunches numbers the enclosure does the job it was designed for and that is to protect. It will also withstand abuse, both the malicious type and the everyday wear and tear

Stop calling it a metal box!
Some enclosure designs call out to customers, with their unique design and marketing on them, some are even referred to as works of art. Every kiosk needs an enclosure, with the look and feel being as subtle or flamboyant as a person’s imagination. Some enclosures have been simple for example a monitor on a pole, to the ridiculous like the giant iPhones and Blackberry mobile phones, used by Car Phone Warehouse to market the relevant smart phones.

When choosing a kiosk for a marketing application, you have to make the right choice otherwise rather than boosting a bottom line it can sink it! An enclosure is the first thing a consumer comes into contact with, so they have to be appealing, or then will not get used.

LCD Enclosure Global are the worlds leading manufacturer of a unique range or waterproof LCD enclosure, that are used for outdoor digital signage solutions throughout the world. From outdoor TV box to self-serve kiosks.

Digital Signage & Transmission Platforms.

Transmission is the hidden link in any digital signage system, choosing the wrong platform can result in a costly budget overrun, here we will try and explain so you so you do not over run on the project.

Due to the advantages and drawbacks of a networked infrastructure, fibre optic cable or CAT cable, it is frequently advisable to use a combination of these technologies for optimum performance at the lowest possible price.

Fibre Optic & CAT5 Cable.
When dealing with high resolution media over long distances that must be broadcast to a group of displays, a combination of fibre optic and CAT5 cable is the optimum solution. In this case, fibre optic cable is used for distance broadcasting together with a local CAT5 video broadcaster for “splitting” the broadcasts to the multiple displays. This is a simple solution to install, since all that is needed is to connect the fibre optic receiver with the CAT5 video broadcaster. And the use of CAT5 for the last 50-150 metres or 150-500 feet of cable instead of fibre optic cable can provide significant cost savings.

Data Network & CAT5 Cable.
When managing multiple groups of digital signage displays form a remote location, a combination of data networking and local CAT5 cabling can give the user the best of both worlds: remote management over IP combined with low cost and network independent infrastructure. The “last mile” use for CAT5 in place of data networks at the display end saves the cost of the display end CPU’s for every display.

All that is needed is a central server that is remotely managed through the data network. The local server is connected to multiple displays through CAT5 technology, freeing the local installation form network dependency. Meaning that each display is network independent and each installation is less expensive to implement.

So no matter if you have your digital signage system outdoors, in an LCD enclosure or a plasma enclosure, there is a solid, reliable solution for transmission.
