Digital Signage & Transmission Platforms.
Due to the advantages and drawbacks of a networked infrastructure, fibre optic cable or CAT cable, it is frequently advisable to use a combination of these technologies for optimum performance at the lowest possible price.
Fibre Optic & CAT5 Cable.
When dealing with high resolution media over long distances that must be broadcast to a group of displays, a combination of fibre optic and CAT5 cable is the optimum solution. In this case, fibre optic cable is used for distance broadcasting together with a local CAT5 video broadcaster for “splitting” the broadcasts to the multiple displays. This is a simple solution to install, since all that is needed is to connect the fibre optic receiver with the CAT5 video broadcaster. And the use of CAT5 for the last 50-150 metres or 150-500 feet of cable instead of fibre optic cable can provide significant cost savings.
Data Network & CAT5 Cable.
When managing multiple groups of digital signage displays form a remote location, a combination of data networking and local CAT5 cabling can give the user the best of both worlds: remote management over IP combined with low cost and network independent infrastructure. The “last mile” use for CAT5 in place of data networks at the display end saves the cost of the display end CPU’s for every display.
All that is needed is a central server that is remotely managed through the data network. The local server is connected to multiple displays through CAT5 technology, freeing the local installation form network dependency. Meaning that each display is network independent and each installation is less expensive to implement.
So no matter if you have your digital signage system outdoors, in an LCD enclosure or a plasma enclosure, there is a solid, reliable solution for transmission.

Digital LCD signage posters used in reception areas.
This is a certain way to capture visitor’s attention whilst waiting for their scheduled appointments. Now one of the best tools on the market is an LCD digital advertising poster, these come in a range of sizes from 19” up to 32”.
Creating the ads is also easy, all you need to do is add a couple of digital images or you can create a video and add that too.
Well what could you put on an LCD digital poster?
Well anything can go onto a LCD poster, images of products - you can put them on a CF memory card and then use different options to phase the images in and out. You can add videos promoting your products with rolling text that has a call to action.
Cost of ownership.
One of the main things that makes a project successful is the cost of ownership, if it is too high the project will fail. Well with any digital poster most of the software you need to create a campaign is already on your computer, so the ownership is very low.
If you have a product, take some pictures of it and promote it.
Who can use a digital LCD poster?
Well anyone from small mom and pa stores, dentists, doctors, beauty salons, universities and restaurants – basically anyone who has a product can use an LCD advertising poster and increase their brand awareness.
One draw back…
The only draw back is that the posters cannot be networked so any content updates have to be either through the CF card or through a USB connection that is built into the poster, all you need to do is to add content to a flash drive and then upload it via the USB – this is ideal is you have multiple posters in one location.

Digital Signage Solutions for all budgets.
- The digital poster, this is an LCD display that is around 19" wide x 23" high and runs off of a memory card, all you need to do is create your media content and drag n drop onto the memory card. Lock the memory card in position (for security reasons) then hang the poster on the wall. Advantages are they are very affordable and easily reused. Limitations you can not "daisy chain" them to provide a digital signage network.
- Interactive Kiosks - these interact with visitors, so that you can actually test demographics, you could install a web cam that records when anyone approaches the kiosk, then logs every product or service they visit on the kiosk. Advantages - very user friendly. Limitations - Cost! Can cost up to $2,500, used indoors.
- Outdoor digital signage - this is an LCD TV, media player and a digital signage enclosure. The enclosures houses the signage hardware and provides protective to NEMA 4X and IP65 standards. Advantages - can be daisy changed and left in un-manned areas, ideal for a digital signage network. Limitations -costs for 1 complete system around $1,900.

A recession proof business due to grow by 129% this year
The increase in narrowcast is due to the falling costs of the technology used in digital signage, such as the LCD and plasma televisions, media players are also coming down in price, this is now making digital signage more affordable for everyday businesses, rather than the large corporations who previously used electronic billboards.
With the increase in use of digital signage, we are seeing a growth of LCD displays being installed everywhere, these are used for:
Public Information Points for passenger information on trains, ferry's and airports.
Brand building.
For a successful digital signage campaign, only 4 elements are required.
-
The advertising campaign. This is the content you are going to use to increase your sales and your profit. This can easy be achieved by searching on Google for "Free digital signage software", once downloaded, all you need to do is drag and drop your content (this can be images, audio, video and text) that is already on your computer and it's done!
-
Display device. This is basically either an LCD display or a Plasma display with the advancement of technology, there is very little that separates them now, you can also use a touch screen display that then creates an interactive experience for the customer.
-
Media player. This is the mini computer that holds the content, it will have an Internet connection, either hard wired or wireless for remote updates and is a fifth the size of a computer.
-
Protection for the digital signage hardware. When the sign is part of an digital outdoor signage solution, the need for protection is increased due to the increase in vandalism to the display and media player. Also the hardware will require protection from the weather, one of the best options and most cost effective is an LCD enclosure or plasma enclosure, depending upon the display used. These enclosures are manufactured to European IP rating standards as well as the American NEMA standard.
